The role of AI in healthcare: Revolutionizing the healthcare industry

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the mimicry of certain aspects of human behaviour such as language processing and decision-making using Large Language Models (LLMs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

LLMs are specific type of AI that analyse and generate natural language using deep learning algorithms. AI programs are made to think like humans and mimic their actions without being biased or influenced by emotions.

LLMs provide systems to process large data sets and provide a clearer view of the task at hand. AI can be used to identify patterns, analyse data, and make predictions based on the data provided to them. It can be used as chatbots, virtual assistants, language translation and image processing systems as well.

Some major AI providers are ChatGPT by Open AI, Bard by Google, Bing AI by Microsoft and Watson AI by IBM. AI has the potential to revolutionize various industries including transportation, finance, healthcare and more by making fast, accurate and informed decisions with the help of large datasets. In this article we will talk about certain applications of AI in healthcare.

Applications of AI in healthcare

There are several applications of AI that have been implemented in healthcare sector which has proven quite successful.
Some examples are:

Medical imaging: AI algorithms are being used to analyse medical images such as x-ray, MRI scans and CT scans. AI algorithms can help radiologists identify abnormalities – assisting radiologists to make more accurate diagnoses. For example, Google’s AI powered Deepmind has shown similar accuracy when compared to human radiologists in identifying breast cancer.
 

Personalised medicine: AI can be used to generate insights on biomarkers, genetic information, allergies, and psychological evaluations to personalise the best course of treatment for patients.

This data can be used to predict how the patient will react to various courses of treatment for a certain condition. This can minimize adverse reactions and reduce the costs of unnecessary or expensive treatment options. Similarly, it can be used to treat genetic disorders with personalised treatment plans. For example, Deep Genomics is a company using AI systems to develop personalised treatments for genetic disorders.

Disease diagnosis: AI systems can be used to analyse patient data including medical history and test results to make more accurate and early diagnosis of life-threatening conditions like cancer. For example, Pfizer has collaborated with different AI based services to diagnose ailments and IBM Watson uses NLP and machine learning algorithms for oncology in developing treatment plans for cancer patients.

Drug discovery: AI can be used in R&D for drug discovery, making the process faster. AI can remove certain constraints present in drug discovery processes for novel chronic diseases. It can lead to saving millions of patients worldwide with a sped-up process, making it both cost and time efficient.

Per McKinsey research, there are around 270 companies working in AI-driven discovery with around 50% situated in the US. In addition, they have identified Southeast Asia and Western Europe as emerging hubs in this space. For example, Merck & Co. are working to develop a new treatment with the help of AI for Alzheimer’s.

What to expect in the future

We are seeing a revolution in the field of Machine Learning and AI happen in the past few years. Now we have LLMs and Image Processing Systems which can be used for faster, more efficient and prioritized results to make decisions more accurately and provide the best possible patient care.

Properly trained AIs are not biased – it’s important to develop these AI systems ethically. The efficiency of these systems depends on specific application and implementation.

AI systems can be biased if they are trained on biased data, so it is important to ensure that the data these models are trained on is diverse and representative. Implementation of AI in healthcare is still in early stages in drug discovery and it’ll see a continued growth going forward.

UK gun owners at risk after Cyber Attack leads to data breach

National Crime Agency (NCA) has started a detailed investigation into a cyber attack that took place on the servers of the National Smallbore Rifle Association (NSRA) members. This attack has led to concerns that they or their family members could be targeted by criminals who could either harm them or threaten them to surrender their firearms at a high price in the black market. This is all because of the strict firearm rules prevailing across the United Kingdom.

The attack took place in mid-last week, and the rifle owners association is busy sharing details with law enforcement to investigate the incident thoroughly and mitigate the risks associated with the attack.

Confirmed sources state that the attack took place on legacy servers, and the fresh smallbore rifle membership details were secure enough as they were stored on a separate set of computer networks. However, a high-ranking source confirmed that the data breach details could put the owners at risk as they could be contacted and threatened by those seeking weaponry on an illegal note.

Strangely, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) was also hit by a cyber-attack at the same time last year. Now the NSRA has hit the news headlines for the same reason.

It is better for gun owners to stay vigilant on what is happening around their homes for the next few months and possibly keep a strict vigil 24×7 via CCTV surveillance cameras or by other means, such as deployment of physical security. Some experts suggest keeping the rifle unloaded and locked up in a safe or a storage cabinet. It is also better to keep the bullets in a separate cabinet and hide the keys. Teens and preteens should be asked not to touch the weapon and handle the gun only under strict adult supervision.

China has 50 hackers against each FBI Cyber Warrior

The FBI Director disclosed to the Congressional Committee that China has assigned around 50 hackers against each bureau’s Cyber Warriors, thus opening-up  about the threats it was facing from the adversary.

Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, spoke to senior executives at the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce Justice, Science and Related Agencies, and disclosed that the bureau was well-prepared to thwart attacks coming from nation-states that are on a mission to steal personal and corporate data, which can later be used to lie, cheat, and create a political crisis.

China is not only a threat to the West, but also to its neighboring nations, like India, as it has a penchant for grabbing lands at the borders to expand its governance reach.

FBI Cyber Personnel may have a major threat at the front, but the 50:1 combination will never be able to weaken the structural operations of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as the agency has an excellent IT framework to neutralize such attacks to the core and has blocked about 15 million fraudulent connections each week, last year.

Especially during the term of Mr. Donald Trump and the current president Joe Biden, all government agencies have been asked to raise their defense line against nation-funded attacks, and FBI happens to be the first agency to follow the guidelines issued by the government to prevent getting digitally exploited.

NOTE: The objective of the Chinese federation is to take control of all the infrastructure of its adversaries. When it doesn’t succeed in doing so, it starts disrupting the core assets, thus leading to a crisis and panic among the citizens. To counter such situations, the FBI has added a $63 million budget to fill in over 192 cyber positions at its agency by the end of 2023.

Google bans 173,000 malicious app developers

Google has issued a ban on approximately 173,000 application developers who tried various methods to get their software published on its Play Store. The web search giant has officially confirmed that it has weeded out a large number of bad accounts and has announced that it will raise the bar even further this year.

According to a source at the technology giant, the company has taken stringent action against those spreading malware and spying tools under the guise of renowned applications and will no longer accept applications that work under the same name and objective.

Google estimates that it has blocked over $2 billion from fraudulent and abusive dealings.

It has also issued stringent rules for developers whose apps access sensitive data and share it with servers, which goes against the privacy rules of the internet juggernaut.

Inside sources suggest that the company is also keeping a close eye on app developers from certain countries, such as India, China, Russia, and some other Asian and African countries, as well as the United States. If found guilty, their accounts are permanently suspended.

Additionally, the company blocks apps with names that are similar to government-related utility and services applications. Previously, it used to allow competing applications. However, to prevent fraud arising from such services, it has decided not to accept applications operating under the same name and motive.

Will it accept applications that are mimicked with just a typo or synonym? Only time will provide an appropriate answer to this question!

Note: Between January and December 2022, Google launched the App Security Improvements program, which helped developers fix over 500,000 vulnerabilities in 300,000 apps that had over 253 billion installs.
