Wolters Kluwer, a global information company offering accounting software and legal services has officially disclosed that its IT assets were hit by a malware which is suspected to be ransomware. Since the database has been encrypted and the data is not available for access we can come to an assumption that the company has been hit by a file encrypting malware.
The said Netherlands based company which offers tax and accounting technology to a number of firms in the United States has halted the tax return database involved with the company from Monday this week sparking security concerns across the accounting sector around the globe.
Details on the number of customers and those impacted are yet to be revealed. The company which trades as Euronext says that it has informed the law enforcement about the incident and a detailed inquiry is going on in full swing.
In other news related to ransomware, researchers from Trend Micro have discovered that those spreading Dharma Ransomware are now seen abusing the trust of Microsoft users in name of fake anti-virus software download.
Yes, you’ve read it right! Cybercriminals are seen spreading a message to phishing email victims that their Microsoft Windows PCs were at risk of becoming corrupted and can only be rescued if they download the anti-virus software from a fraudulent link which then spreads Dharma Ransomware locking files from being accessed further.
In order to keep their systems & network isolated from Dharma and other ransomware attacks, security experts are advising organizations to adopt good cybersecurity hygiene, such as backing up files, securing email gateways with 2FA, using best passwords and keeping systems and apps updated and patched.
