Ransomware as National Security Threat

US Tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Google are likely to urge the Biden led government to announce ransomware attacks as a threat to national security. The development comes after the white house launched a detailed investigation in the December 2020 discovered SolarWinds Hack revealed by security firm FireEye.

FBI and US Department of Justice have already proposed an executive order to be endorsed by the white house soon. And the bill stresses on the fact for a legal action against criminal enterprises that indulge in ransomware attacks, illicit software installations and stealing of money from e-wallets.

Ransomware Task Force argues that all the ransomware attacks should be deemed as a threat to National Infrastructure as they are relentlessly disrupting critical networks such as healthcare. They are recommending the creation of government created ransomware recovery fund that will assist victims in recovering from the digital attack and will also help the law enforcement in disrupting the IT infrastructure of the criminals.

Therefore, the white house is being urged to exert pressure on nations that involve in such cyber warfare and if they refuse to oblige will have to face serious action such as sanctions, trade ban, and blocking their imports of essential commodities from international markets.

Now to those who are not aware of the matter, the US Treasury in March 2021 accused EvilCorp, linked to Russian Intelligence for launching the SolarWinds attack.

However, the Joe Biden led nation was almost helpless in this regard as it could not prosecute cyber criminals operating outside its jurisdiction limits, except to announce sanctions, ban visas and withholding aids at international level.
