Data Breach exposes information related to 69 million members of Neopets

Neopets that offer pet lovers the privilege to pamper a virtual pet were hit by a cyber attack resulting in data breach of over 69 million members and the source code of a few of the virtual games that can be played with digital pets.

As per an update released by Bleeping Computer, the online resource to publish this info first, a threat actor named TarTarX was the one who intercepted the database to steal source code and the information stored on the database.

TarTarX claimed on Twitter that he/she has sold the information the dark web for 4 BTC that accounts for $110,000 as per the price of today.

If we do a cross check, the seller has sold information of almost half of the members and that details include gender, country, DoB, Zip Code, email address, usernames, names, and some game development related info.

Neopets IT team has admitted the details of the breach that are being speculated in the media and added that a Discord server fell victim to the hack and their staff is busy resolving and mitigating the risks.

NOTE 1- Neopets is a website that allows users to pamper their pets on a virtual note with items that can be brought online by using 1 or 2 virtual currencies (Neopoints n Neocash).

NOTE 2- Gaming companies and those involved in cloud business are increasingly becoming targets of cyber attacks and data breaches.
