In December 2021, Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) discovered the intense activities being conducted by Glupteba Botnet on the internet and filed a lawsuit in a district court of New York.
A report was submitted, and it was clearly mentioned in it that two Russian nations were operating this botnet group that works differently from the other conventional groups of botnets. As it doesn’t depend on a centralized platform of command and controlling and instead distributes the central authority to other servers in the network, a tactic seen in cryptocurrency blockchain of recording transactions in a disseminated manner.
Google won the lawsuit against two Russian nationals who were found guilty in operating the said botnet network. Their legal fees and the penalty to pay to the tech giant against the damages incurred, will also be levied against the culprits and the duty to do so has been assigned to Interpol and a non-profit organization that is known to amicably solve these matters.
The decision to prosecute Russian criminals will act as a lesson to all those states indulging in cyberwarfare and Google has sealed a victory in such a way that it blocks defendants from abusing the court system and appealing for further hearings- as it delays justice.
After a temporary hiatus, the Alphabet Inc’s subsidiary has resumed its activity and is now targeting IoT devices that are not connected or operated to Google or its subsidiaries.
