Reddit user emails and passwords leaked in a hack

On Wednesday this week, American technology giant Reddit announced that hackers have breached its Tier-2 storage systems to gain access to users email addresses and passwords from 2005 to 2007.

As per the sources reporting to Cybersecurity Insiders, a hacker gained access into a few of the Reddit employee accounts in early June this year by interpreting text messages; and is said to have breached a database containing email addresses and encrypted passwords of users stored from 2005 to 2007.

Christopher Slowe, a senior engineer and founder of Reddit admitted that the news was true and said that hackers gained read-only access to some systems that contained backup data, source code, and other logs.

Slowe further added in his statement that old salted and hashed passwords were also compromised in the breach and some private messages could have also found their way to the servers of the hackers.

Reddit says that the only solution to deal with the situation is to urge all its users to reset the passwords- which it has already done via email and text messages.

A statement with regards to the hack from Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and husband to tennis sensation Serena Williams is due for clarification.

Now, to those who are concerned about the breach, here’s a briefing on what to do.

If in case, you haven’t opted for newsletters, then you can take a sigh of relief as you are not affected.

Otherwise, the company recommends that users search their inboxes for emails sent by noreply@redditmail dot com between June 3rd and June 17 to learn if they are affected.
