Massachusetts Community College loses $800,000 Via Phishing Email Cyber Attack

A Community College in Massachusetts is said to lose $807,130 due to a cyber attack say sources reporting to Cybersecurity Insiders. Cape Cod Community College is the educational institution in discussion and the incident is said to have occurred last month due to a phishing email.

As said in the earlier paragraph, the cyber attack happened due to an employee who clicked on an email bait that appeared to have come from a college located in another district. After clicking the man realized that the attachment was suspicious and reported the same to the IT department.

The college staff which sprang into service discovered that the attachment contained sophisticated virus having the ability to replicate. Hackers who devised the virus used it to siphon $807,130 through 9 financial transfers from the school accounts.

“Federal authorities have been asked to investigate the incident and we have so far recovered $278,760 from the hackers”, said John L Cox. President of Cape Cod Community College. He added that the computer security system has been replaced along with the hardware & software firewalls and all the infected computer systems will be replaced by the end of the coming week.

Established in 1961 the institution is known to offer bachelors and masters degree programs in partnership with other Universities such as Boston University, Lesley University, Salem State University, Suffolk University, UMass Dartmouth, Wheelock College, and UMass Boston.
