Cyber Attack on Police Federation leads to cancellation of Centenary Celebrations

Cyber attacks which took place on the UK based Police Federation in March this year has made the authorities cancel the annual conference organized for celebrating the Federation’s Centenary supposed to be attended by Home Secretary.

Going by the details, a ransomware attack is reported to have taken place on the database of The Police Federation of England and Wales on March 9th of this year locking down access to the servers and supposedly deleting some of the vital documents.

Cybersecurity Insiders learned that the attack took place on the servers operating on the Police Federation’s Surrey Headquarters which represents over 119,000 police officers representing over 43 forces across England and Wales.

John Apter, the National Chairman disclosed some details of the incidents last week to a Police magazine and said that the federation was hit by two cyber attacks which took place in a span of just 13 days i.e. on March 9th and March 21. So, the authorities decided to cancel the Centenary Celebrations which was due to take place in June this year.

National Crime Agency which learned about the incident on March 11th, 2019 is said to have started a criminal investigation into the incident from April 7th, 2019.

Police federation authorities are suspecting the possibility of involvement of some state-funded actors in the incident.

However, it failed to mention the names of hackers groups or the nations behind the incident for obvious reasons.

National Crime Agency, National Cyber Security Center and Information Commissioners Officer are aware of the incident and later developments.
