Huawei barred from cyber threat sharing and NCSC alerts UK universities against Cyber Attacks

Huawei which was banned by the United States from supplying 5G network equipment to public and private companies has been blocked by the Trump administration from sharing info related to cyber threats.

So, from now on the world’s second-best Chinese smartphone supplier will no longer receive updates from companies which might slow down its noesis to acknowledge or patch security bugs in its products.

Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams shortly addressed as FIRST has admitted in a press statement yesterday that it has suspended the membership of Huawei from its membership forum as per the orders from White House. Therefore, the Chinese vendor will no longer receive any incident reports, response support, access to best practices tools and techniques related to Information Security.

Note- FIRST happens to be the first standardized body which happens to receive updates related to vulnerabilities and exploits on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, silicon chips, GPUs and SD memory cards. So, severed ties with FIRST might prove disadvantageous to Huawei on a major note in coming months.

A few days ago, Huawei has reacted to the issue blatantly by saying that the US government has taken up a relentless campaign against its company by carrying out Cyberattacks, online harassment and spurious legal actions such as ban across the country.

Going forward with the other news, the National Cyber Security Center of UK has issued an official warning that Universities operating across the United Kingdom have become vulnerable targets for both financially motivated and nation funded cybercriminals.

The NCSC which happens to a cyber wing of GCHQ stated it its latest media update that Universities and other educational institutes in the UK will become soft targets for state-sponsored cyber espionage as they hold a lot of valuable information which can prove a gold mine for hackers. This includes research work and other intellectual property such as valuable grant-funded research work compiled by former and current staff and students.

China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea happens to be the top adversaries of UK from the past two years and so Universities operating in the region might become targets to phishing, ransomware and crypto-mining attacks.
