Google Pixel 4 to get a Mobile Security update to fix facial recognition Vulnerability

All those who are thinking to buy a Google Pixel 4 next month but are worried that the latest facial recognition flaw might affect your privacy, here’s news to rejoice. The web search giant has announced that it is going to fix the controversial facial recognition feature that will allow Pixel 4 phones to unlock only when the eyes of the owner are open.

As per the update was given by the internet juggernaut yesterday, the Internet giant has developed a fix last week and will roll it to users by this month-end so that all new buyers can get it soon- probably by early next month.

Readers of Cybersecurity Insiders have to notify a fact that BBC was the news resource to first highlight the problem which allowed upcoming Pixel 4 phones to unlock using facial recognition even when the owner of the device was asleep. This allowed anyone to grab the phone, point it to the owners’ faces if he/she were sleeping and then access the data.

Now, this vulnerability will be patched with the latest security update which is reported to be rolled out by this month-end.

Note 1- Apple’s latest breed of iPhones requires the owner’s eyes to be open for unlocking. Otherwise, it easily snaps to a passcode if it’s unable to read one’s face.

Google claims that its FR based Biometrics can be used to authenticate apps and payments including those related to banking apps.

Note 2- Google Pixel 4 will be going on sale on Oct 28th this year and will be offered at a starting price of $799(Pixel 4) and $899(Pixel 4 XL) respectively.
