As most of the World’s Powerful Twitter accounts were compromised in a security incident that took place on Wednesday- July 15th, 2020, a federal inquiry led by FBI has been ordered to investigate the reason and the culprits behind the cyber attack.
As per the Prima Facie of the law enforcement agency, hackers infiltrated the database of Twitter via an email phishing attack on its employee/s and then posted fake tweets on behalf of the account holder asking the followers to deposit Bitcoins into BTC wallets owned by the cybercriminals.
And reports are in that scammers could have made around $116,000 in Cryptocurrency equating to 12.8 BTC in 4-5 hours of the fraudulent public posts.
Unconfirmed, reports say, that an employee or two could have been involved in the highly coordinated social engineering attack that compromised accounts of many prominent personalities such as Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Wiz Khalifa, Mike Bloomberg, Kim Kardashian, and Kanya West who has recently announced that he will be running up for the 2020 US elections as a probable presidential candidate.
Note- On Wednesday this week,Twitter had to suspend the activity of posting and retweeting of various celebrities as their accounts were compromised by hackers who started to post messages of to donate money in BTC that would rather be returned as double after a specific period.
Cybersecurity Experts from CrowdStrike feel that the attack could be more serious than what it seems now, as hackers might have also gained access to private data of the users leading them to commit more intense cybercrime like blackmail or causing harm to national security later.
What’s riveting in this whole tweeting drama is that the incident took place just when the social media giant was about to announce a new security feature for all its users to secure their accounts from fraudulent access.
