According to a report released by US Security firm Cybereason Inc, some of the top telecom companies in the world were digitally compromised by hackers sponsored by China stealing info, such as phone data and location information of telecom service users, respectively.
Going deep into the details, Lior Div, the CEO of Cybereason confirmed the incident and tagged the espionage as a threat to national security and stated that such state sponsored espionage operations make customer lose trust on the telecom operators.
Interestingly, the compromise of the telecom equipment was carried out after compromising Microsoft Exchange Servers in between 2017 to 2021. And the compromised networks are among those belonging to companies from Southeast Asia.
Zhao Lijian, the official spokesperson from Chinese Foreign Ministry, denied the allegations put forward by Cybereason and added that the company was trying to smear and suppress China for political motives.
Check Point Software Technologies carried out another research on this note and concluded that the Chinese hacking group was involved in the espionage campaign compromising government firms, law enforcement agencies, political figures, multinational telecom networks in Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines.
Mr. Lior Div released a public statement yesterday via his social media account that the digital compromise was so much that it can shut down a portion or the entire section of network. He also added that Naikon, Soft Cell, and Group 3390 were the state sponsored hacking groups involved in the incident that could hide themselves in recycle bin folders or in the file folders related to anti-virus software.
