Credential stuffing cyber attacks to double up in UK during Christmas

As most of the UK populace have decided to stay home and shop safely online ( because of the rise in Omicron Covid variant cases) security experts are expecting a two-fold rise in credentials stuffing cyber attacks in this year.

According to an analysis report conducted by Arkose Labs, a massive spike in cyber attack cases will be witnessed during November-December 2021. As most of the web traffic will be busy in buying gifts and luxuries for their loved ones.

During last year’s Christmas season, a rise in credential stuffing attacks was witnessed and this will double this year and will continue till the New Year Shopping season ends in the first week of January’21.

Credential stuffing attack is where hackers try to induce usernames and passwords procured from data breaches and try to hack online accounts of the populace using web services such as Twitter, Amazon, Tinder…

As the process is fully automated, i.e. takes place through software, such attacks often yield great monetary results to cyber crooks.

Reuse of passwords, by not using a strong password and not inculcating a practice of changing the password once or twice in 3 months can cause an increase in credential stuffing attacks.

Also, Arkose Labs Threat analysis confirms that the industries that were most infected with credential stuffing attacks were gaming, IT, social media and banking sector, as most of the attacks witnessed last year were on these specified industries.

What’s more interesting about the report is that it has also listed the countries that were majorly prone to such attacks during the holiday season with UK topping the list followed by Asia and North America.
