After the Republicans took hold of the house and Trump Administration the Senate in the United States after the US midterm polls, the Federal authorities have now shifted their focus on to the US 2020 General Elections.
From the past two months, noted media resources were buzzing with the feed that the midterm polls could be influenced by Russian interference in one form or the other. But to the sigh of relief of Fed officials, nothing was observed as anticipated although it is not entirely clear why?
Now, from the past two days, a new speculation is on the drive which says that the foreign adversaries are saving their cyber ammunition for the 2020 Presidential showdown by planning for a misinformation campaign from early 2019.
The news is also out that a fake news campaign was blocked by the officials just before the Tuesday’s election which was kept as a secret from the media for obvious reasons.
“They have shown will and their capability. But I am not sure why they stepped back at the last minute”, said Kirsten Nielsen, the Secretary of Homeland Security.
Speaking on a broader perspective, Nielsen said that they might save their planning for the next elections which can affect the democracy.
In a press conference held after the elections on Wednesday, President Trump said that his administration worked hard to shore up the elections and he’d issue a report on the effort soon.
According to a post of The New York Times, US Intelligence has asserted that nations like Russia, China and Iran may engage in disruption of critical infrastructure in a year or so and might start influencing US policies and voters before the upcoming elections.
Chris Krebs, the head of Cyber Security at the Department of Homeland Security said this year’s election was probably a warm-up for the big game for the adversaries which could be in 2020.
