British Airways data breach which led to the information leak pertaining to 244,000 credit card details of customers is said to have earned £9.4M for Russian Hackers. Cybersecurity experts say that the hackers made money by putting the data sale on the dark web for just £6.94 – £38.58.
Magecart, a Russia linked cybercriminal group is said to have launched the attack on the airliner in August this year after the breach was detected 17 days after it began.
Since then a detailed inquiry on the incident was launched which led to the confirmation that 244,000 card details were compromised in the breach.
Vitali Kremez, the director of research at cybersecurity firm Flashpoint endorsed the news as his company was hired to conduct a detailed probe on the cyber incident. Kremez said criminals sold the details online for a premium price as the financial data related to European cards is much on demand on the dark web.
Security experts say that Magecart put the stolen into on the web with the title ‘CVV2 Dumps Update (Highly Valid)’. And put a note that the info contained sensitive details of flight travelers from countries like Korea, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, China, Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, US, and UK,
The criminal group which is said to be led by an EX- Intelligence officer of GRU is also suspected to be in the hack of the concerts ticketing website Ticketmaster.
British Airways Chief Executive Officer Alex Cruz sincerely apologized for the breach and said that such an incident will never get repeated in near future.
