A hacker who infiltrated the database maintained by DataViper three months ago is now threatening to leak all details bought from the server on the dark web for money.
The DataViper server that belongs to security researcher Vinny Troia working for Cybersecurity Firm Night Lion Security reportedly contains data belonging to over 8,200 databases of different companies that targeted previously with cyber attacks leaking information regarding billion of users.
As the hacker accessed the info, he/she is said to have copied the data and is now selling the details for a huge sum. One such data trove the hacker accessed belongs to the MGM Resorts, and the data related to 142 million hotel guests is being sold for $2,900. And for your information, it is now proved that it leaked in reality the data related to over 142 million hotel guests in the 2019 data breach, unlike 10.6 million reported by the hotel management last year.
As of now, details like financial info, DoB, contact numbers, social security numbers, hotel stay info were up for sale on the dark web and the hacker might sell an other set of sensitive details in the next sale.
MGM Resorts has reacted to the news and stated that it was aware of the data breach and will take measures to neutralize any repercussion affects from the incident.
Meanwhile, DataViper says that the hacker gained access only to the test server and the information available on the dark web was not leaked from their server.
Note 1- DataViper keeps a tab of hacked information from servers belonging to many companies and is reported to hold billions of records accessed by hackers till date.
Note 2-The intention of the hacker is to end the career of the Vinny Troia.
Note 3- The last year’s server exposure to hackers started the IT staff of MGM Resorts to hire two forensic experts related to Cybersecurity to investigate the incident and the hotel chain states it has informed all its guests about the incident last year and in accordance to the applicable laws.
