Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro has blocked nearly 27.8 billion cyber threats so far in 2020 and that includes 9 million COVID related threats observed in the first half of this year. However, the security giant says that the threat surge hasn’t ended here as there is more to follow by this year’s end.
The data projected by Trend Micro matches the one released by Microsoft early last month, where the tech giant reiterated the fact that hackers are seen re-purposing their existing campaigns to take advantage of the current spread of Corona Pandemic.
The Tokyo based security firm states that its sensors detected over 8.8 million cyber threats related to malware spread through spam emails.
Business Email Compromise (BEC) stands at the top of the listed threats revealed by Trend Micro as cyber crooks are seen distracting the remote workers with social engineering attacks to steal money from corporate accounts.
Ransomware spread through emails was seen as another common threat observed so far in 2020. And interestingly, the same threat stood at the same position in 2019, but witnessed a 45% decrease in spread in this year.
Trend Micro has also stated that organizations are on the verge of facing perennial risks because of software vulnerabilities. Especially those operating in the Technology industry such as Cloud Services. There is also a 16% increase in vulnerabilities discovered in the Industrial Control Systems(ICS) when compared to same time last year.
