North Korea Lazarus devises new Linux Malware

All these days we were in a myth that Linux Operating systems are less vulnerable to malware related cyber attacks as they are used rarely. But Russian Cybersecurity Firm Kaspersky has detected that dozens of APT threat actors from North Korea are now targeting Linux operating systems with malware.

There has been a significant rise in cyber attacks on those using Linux OSes that are otherwise termed to be safer and more secure operating systems than those offered by Microsoft Windows, and likewise.

Kaspersky says that their discovery is worrisome as most of the companies load their critical servers with Linux OS over Windows.

For example, Lazarus has devised a malware that has the potential to carry out weaponized attacks against main servers of some corporate companies. Already, many companies from Europe and United States were reported to have fallen prey to these attacks. But the attacks were never exposed to the media for multiple reasons”, says Yury Namestnikov, Head of Kaspersky’s Research Labs, Russia.

Most companies desire to keep their systems super-secure and so use Linux more often than before. And this has made hackers from North Korea devise sophisticated tools that can infiltrate such systems added Namestnikov.

The only advice Kaspersky is offering to admins is to use Trusted software resources on their systems and never use unencrypted update channels and avoid running binaries and scripts from unsecure sources.

NOTE- Kaspersky’s products and services now communicate via HTTPs and also alerts users when the password strength is weak while registering on a new website that includes e-commerce portals.
