A polish game video making company dubbed CD Projekt is reported to have hit by a ransomware attack that has crippled its internal systems to a large extent. However, the IT staff of the company are not interested in bowing down to the demands of hackers and instead are interested in recovering the information from data backups.
Unconfirmed sources say that the source code related to Cyberpunk 2077 game developed by CD Projekt was stolen in the incident. And as soon as the incident was revealed on Twitter, Sony pulled the game down from its PlayStation store.
How the hackers group entered the network and who were they is yet to be known.
No details related to users or players were compromised, says the Polish game developing company.
The Witcher series, Gwent, Thronebreaker are some renowned games developed by CD Projekt Red.
In coming days, CD Projekt wants to work on single projects and wants to avoid in the development of multiple projects at the same time.
Note 1- Last year, game makers Ubisoft and Crytek were targeted by Egregor Ransomware spreading gang. And Capcom is the latest victim of Ragnar Locker. Now, CD Projekt is the 4th largest gaming company to become a target of those spreading double extortion filled file encrypting malware.
Note 2- Founded in 1994 by Marcin Iwinski and Micheal Kicinski, the company developed into one of the largest developer and distributor of CD-ROM games. But as mafia related to gaming piracy was running on full swing across the world, the company owners conducted business through mom and pop shops.
