Australian Labor Party- New South Wales branch has reportedly become a victim of a ransomware attack where the hackers stolen critical information such as passport details, contract details, resumes, financial details of the party, driving licenses and employment contracts.
Avaddon Ransomware group is suspected to be behind the attack and are reportedly demanding millions of dollars for not publishing the stolen data on the dark web. A time frame of 10 days has been provided by the hackers after which all the data is said to be posted online.
Interestingly, the hackers have posted some information of the Australian NSW Local Government Councilor on the dark web to strengthen their claims and are threatening to leak more such information as time passes by.
Present and former employee service and confidentiality contracts were also stolen in the digital attack, making the issue seriously.
What’s interesting about the incident is that the Avaddon Ransomware group is threatening to launch DDoS attack on the labor party next if it doesn’t respond to its demands on a positive note in the said time frame.
A Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDoS) is a kind of cyber attack where hacker/s targets the web servers with fake traffic, thus disrupting the entire network because of traffic overload.
Note- Early last week Avaddon was also reportedly involved in a ransomware attack on Melbourne based company Schepisi Communications. The company is supposedly a dealer of Telstra Telecom Products and offers services to many business requirements across the business markets of Australia.
