All these days Microsoft has been warning online users against certain online practices that might push individual or corporate networks into jeopardy.
Now, the Satya Nadella led company has issued a fresh statement that says all Windows 10 users can keep their systems and networks safe and secure from ransomware attacks, just by following the instructions as stated below.
The American technology giant says that its Win 10 operating system has ransomware protection by default that has to be turned ON by the user. And once done it has the potential to keep most of the ransomware threats at bay.
Window Defender software, found under the Virus & Threat Protection feature offers a ransomware protection feature that helps the OS defend against most of the prevailing ransomware variants, provided the user turns that protection ON.
So, to turn it on, the user just needs to search for the “Ransomware Protection” feature in Windows 10 Cortana Search Bar and then follow the steps. Simultaneously, users will also have the option to keep the ransomware protection ON for certain folders or all of the folders.
Now, coming to the fact of how secure the feature will keep the folders from the malware.
According to research conducted by the Ingenuity Lab of the University of Nottingham, the Ransomware Protection feature of Microsoft Windows Defender helps in keep almost 73% of ransomware variants at bay. Also, the study is urging users to turn on the feature of Controlled Folder Access as it helps in issuing a warning to users when any suspicious activity takes place in folders.
Keeping a backup of files on Microsoft One Drive or any other cloud platform also makes sense as a user can retrieve the lost files from the cloud storage if in case their device functioning witnesses any collapse.
Another method to keep the files safe from malware and snooping activities is to keep them stored on an external hard drive that is connected to the internet when in need.
While Microsoft is constantly trying to improve its security features for years, hackers are still trying to exploit even the slightest of the possibilities.
So, following basic Cybersecurity hygiene and never revealing any personal details such as DOBs, contact details and any such information online helps defend a system from falling prey to phishing and ransomware attacks.
