Olympus suffers another Ransomware Attack within a month

Sounds strange! But Japan-based Camera manufacturer Olympus has released a press statement that its IT staff have observed a potential cyber attack on its IT systems on October 10th,2021 and have taken measures to contain it.

Sources reporting to Cybersecurity Insiders state that the latest cyber incident observed on October 10th, 2021 could be of ransomware genre. But an official statement is awaited on this note!

Olympus declared through a statement issued on October 12th, 2021 that the attack could hinder its manufacturing and admin operations to a certain extent in its offices in US, Canada and Latin America and reassured that the staff was working with highest priority to bail the company out of trouble ASAP.

A third party forensic firm has been hired to investigate the matter to the core and mitigate the risks.

As per the Prima facie available with Cybersecurity Insiders, the impact of the malware incident could only be limited to systems operating in America with no other regions affected.

Note 1- This is not the first time that the IT Infrastructure of Olympus have been targeted by a file encrypting malware attacks. In fact, early last month, i.e. on September 8th, 2021 (specifically) the staff of Olympus witnessed a malware intrusion in their systems that disrupted most of their core operations for days.

Note 2– BlackMatter Ransomware group claimed to have taken charge of the systems demanding millions as ransom to free up the database from encryption.

Note 3- BlackMatter Ransomware has taken a pledge that it will never cyber attack computer networks related to healthcare, oil and gas, energy, and defense companies along with water utilities and food processing and manufacturing firms, such as meat and biscuit companies.
