Britain is reported to be on a high ‘Cyber Security’ alert these days and the news has been confirmed by Ciaran Martin, the Chief Executive of National Cyber Security Center(NCSC). The reason, the nation wants to guard the nation’s IT infrastructure against any variant of cyber attacks coming from Russia.
Martin says that a number of defensive measures are already put in place and the officials at the NCSC are busy in searching for ways to better their defenses.
Britain has chosen to go into a defensive mode since the horrors of Salisbury’s Nerve agent poisoning.
Martin hinted that Russia poses as a serious and sustained cyber threat to Britain and has been so from a period of time.
Readers of Cybersecurity Insiders have to notify a fact over here that the relationship between UK and Moscow has deteriorated since Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent in March this year.
Last week the law enforcement authorities at Britain identified two men- Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov as the culprits who smeared the highly toxic chemical on the door handle of the hotel room in which Skripal and his daughter were staying.
Britain suspects that the two identified men were connected to the GRU Military intelligence service of Russia and entered the UK via Gatwick Airport and smuggled the nerve agent into the country in a perfume bottle.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the identified men in no way related to his military intelligence and were just civilians who lived a simple life in Russia.
As the UK openly accused Russia of killing Skripals, it expects retaliatory cyber attacks from Russia sooner or later this year.
For this reason, Martin is urging all public and private entities operating in the UK to ‘up’ their cyber defenses. He added that NCSC will try its best to make the UK as the hardest target for cyber attacks and emphasized that Russian cyber threat is only one part of multi-dimensional risk picture.
