1.) The parental access to online student info of Oklahoma City Schools is said to have been blocked by a cyber attack last week. Beth Harrison, the spokeswoman of Oklahoma District released a press statement saying that the attack took place on Sept 17 and was identified and contained by the September 19th,2018. But Harrison is sure that due to some technicalities the website access could have been restricted for some and might not be an issue of Denial of service as reported by a certain section of media.
Sources reporting to Cybersecurity Insiders say that last week a cyber attack did take place on Incident Campus which provides IT services to K-12 schools nationwide. The source on the condition of anonymity said that the data centers of Incident Campus are being cyber attacked on a frequent note – with most of the attacks being launched from within the district.
Security experts suspect that a students group or school drops outs could be behind the attacks. However, they want to confirm the news only after a full inquiry takes place on this issue. NOTE- the school district of Oklahoma is biggest in the USA as it consists 45k student enrollments.
2.) On Thursday morning(Sept 20), the Port of Barcelona said that it became a victim of a cyber attack forcing the organization to launch the business continuity plan. Port authorities say that the IT department of the company is investigating the attack details and so more details can only be revealed after the probe gets finished on a complete note.
3.) We all know that a ransomware attack disrupted the functioning of servers of The Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Caucus on March 3rd this year. The news is out now that the Senate paid $703,600 to Microsoft for the data recovery and rebuild of IT systems.
Cybersecurity Insiders has learned that those spreading the ransomware demanding 28($31,000) bitcoins to free up the database with a decryption key. But the IT authorities of the Senate chose not to bow down to the demands of the hackers and instead chose to rebuild the IT infrastructure at a heavy cost.
4.) A job ad posted on an International Job Recruiting website is said to led Arran Brewery website to a ransomware attack. Sources say that the Scotland based brewery posted a job vacancy in a job portal to which it received a lot of applications. One of those applications is said to have contained a malware-filled file which on a click infected the entire database of the brewery with devious Dharma Bip Ransomware. As the value of the data loss was beyond the ransom demand, the brewery decided not to pay the hackers and instead go for a backup and recovery plan.
5.) On July 20th,2018 SingHealth released an official statement that personal data of more than 1.5 million of its patients was compromised. Now news is out that the hackers who cyber-attacked the database of SingHealth specifically searched for the health records of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s personal info and outpatient prescription via his NRIC Number.
6.) Online Retailer ‘SHEIN’ has notified to its customers that a serious data breach which occurred on August 22 this year could have compromised data of more than 6.42 million customers. The fashion website which has a worldwide business said that a malware attack launched by hackers compromised email addresses and encrypted passwords of its customers.
A leading cybersecurity firm has been hired to investigate the incident and the website is urging its customers to change their password logins to the website as quickly as possible.
