The (ISC)² Peru Chapter was started by initiative of Javier Romero, CISSP, by mid-2017, when he put in a petition to start a new chapter. Worried that top-level management of companies in Peru was not aware of – or possibly “not concerned enough about” – information security matters, a group of (ISC)² members committed to advocate information security in the country joined together with the goal of becoming the reliable reference in the subject for the local industry and government. Luis Mendoza, Michael Ocrospoma, and Rolando Navarro, together with J. Romero, then outlined an action strategy for the years to follow.
Peru chapter developed a “case studies system”, a methodology to be introduced and offered to universities for the postgraduate courses students as a way to expand the chapter influence, establish itself as a reference in information security, and also as way to finance the chapter activities. The primary target audience is the top-level managers of the main comp anies in the country, to promote the importance of information security and cybersecurity as critical part of the business strategy and thus attracting potential sponsors for the chapter as well.
Every last Wednesday of the month, a lecture is offered to all chapter members, given by an industry expert. This lecture is also broadcast live via Facebook for those that are not able to attend in person. In such a short period of time, the Peru chapter is sought by many experts who volunteer to give lectures.
The Peru Chapter became official in July 2018, in the occasion of the 2018 LATAM Chapters Leadership Meeting in Santiago, Chile. A month later, in its annual meeting, they defined a schedule of monthly activities that goes up to the end of 2019. They are also in the process of obtaining legal registration as an association. The chapter also partnered with America Sistemas, a Peruvian news portal on ICT, in which the chapter will promote its activities in exchange for support in its weekly newsletter.
The chapter is working hard to face all the challenges as a new chapter in order to be recognized by the industry, the local government, and the public in general as a reference in cybersecurity in the country.
