Cybersecurity warning for millions of websites

According to a security report released by BBC, millions of websites might face a risk of insecurity from March 4th,2020 due to a bug found in the digital certificates utilized to secure their access.

It is estimated that over 3 million websites will be on the verge of “loss of trust” as all its users will receive an alert warning saying that the website is insecure.

Cybersecurity Insiders has learned that the certificate-issuing authority happens to be Internet Security Research Group(ISRG) which is a non-profit organization offering a security program titled ‘Let’s Encrypt’. And ISRG happens to be the same organization which has celebrated last month the activity of issuing its billionth certificate.

Highly placed sources say that “Let’s Encrypt” has been backed by companies such as Cisco, Facebook, and Google and has been a driving force in securing most of the tech web portals.

Security researchers say that all the security certificates issued to websites have to be revoked due to a bug effect which has to be renewed again and replaced- thus requiring a lot of time and resources to re-process on a digital note.

Note- Digital Certificates are nothing but small encrypted codes that help maintain secure communication between devices and websites. Usually, these certificates have an expiry date of anything between a few months to several years. And if websites miss renewing their digital certificates then those visiting these portals will witness a security pop-up mentioning the essence that the site is highly insecure.

BBC report says that over 3 million websites will face the loss of trust issues from users due to a bug in their digital certificates.
