As the whole world is jostling hard with the COVID 19 Pandemic, researchers from the University College of London are using Super Computers and the technology of Artificial Intelligence to process large sets of information to compute a theory for building a vaccine for the Wuhan Virus.
Traditionally, it takes at least 3 years for a vaccine to be developed for an infection spread. But if the human intervention is cut off and the whole procedure is assigned to the supercomputers, the procedure can be consolidated to a month or so say scientists working on the subject.
And if certain machine learning tools start supporting the supercomputing task, then researchers argue that they can come up with an anti-virus drug just in a matter of a few weeks.
Already, a team of 100 researchers from the US and Europe has been assigned the task of finding medicine for treating Novel Coronavirus victims and some Supercomputers working in tandem with some large institutions have been pressed into service to achieve some positivity on the issue.
Summit, a supercomputer from Oak Ridge National Lab in US and SuperMUC-NG from Germany are leading the front to analyze large data volumes related to drug compounds that can neutralize the effects of the spikes located on the surface of Corona that cause the spread.
Researchers are using the supercomputing technology to identify virus proteins or parts of proteins that stimulate immunity which could help develop a vaccine for Corona.
“It is for the first time that we are using super-computing power to develop a vaccine and that can lead to the drug development process which usually takes years otherwise”, says Professor Coveney
Normally it takes over 12 years and a $2 billion spend on discovering a vaccine and a drug. But we are re-writing the rules which might help to the betterment of Human future added Peter Coveney from UCL.
