Schiphol airport issues alert against Cyber Attacks and Sabotage

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, informally known as Schiphol Airport is an international airport located in the Netherlands. Recently, Schiphol issued a warning that the security at its passport checking count needs an overhaul to protect all the sensitive information from cyber-attacks and other forms of sabotages.

A report filed by Court of Audit claims that the security at the border is inadequate and is not future proof as it is super- vulnerable to cyber-attacks and espionage-related activities.

As the influx of passengers is heavy at Schiphol, hackers might find these systems as soft targets to extract critical info such as the nationality of passengers traveling to and fro, their destinations, and their traveling purpose and companion details. If such systems can be intercepted, then the threat actors could easily bypass such systems and make unwanted people enter or exit the country.

It is estimated that over 80-90 million passengers pass through the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport every year- thus making it one of the favorite entry points in the European Union. The boarding points where passengers are checking in are not digitally capable to withstand attacks- says the report.

Another shortfall is that all these check-in systems are not working in sync with the Security Operations Center at the Ministry of Defense and there is no audit body to look into matters if anything worse takes place.

Although a new terminal with all the latest facilities is functioning on a partial note from the past few months at Schiphol, more things have to be added to make it complete by the pre-determined deadline of 2023. And that might take much time say experts all due to the COVID 19 pandemic spread.

So, it’s a tough time ahead for the authorities as IT systems go down, then the border police force can’t do its job.
