Italy’s Email service provider named Email.it is in the news headlines for all wrong reasons these days. As news is out that the data of more than 600,000 users are being sold on the dark web. The mail service provider has also confirmed the news and admitted that an infiltration did take place on its database. However, it failed to provide any further details.
According to the sources reporting our Cybersecurity Insiders, the Email.it data breach came into light at the end of last week when a ‘No Name’ hacking group posted on twitter that it infiltrated the database of the Italian email service provider in January 2018 and since it denied to pay a ransom of 3 Bitcoins, the hacking group decided to sell the data on the dark web.
The hackers have openly confessed that they digitally raided the data center of the service provider almost 2 years ago through a server vulnerability. And for reason did not reveal it to the world in any form. It was after the email service offering company rejected their demand for paying a ransom on February 1st, 2020 the threat actors decided to make money by selling the email addresses on the dark web.
Highly placed sources say that some plaintext passwords, security questions, email IDs, and attachments signed up for the service in between 2007 to 2020 were accessed and stolen by hackers.
As soon as the IT staff of the Email.it received an extortion email, it rejected their plea and notified the Italian Police Service instead.
