Bitcoin Cyber Attack leads to Indian Prime Minister Narender Modi Twitter hack

At same time last year, a notorious hacking group somehow infiltrated the servers of Twitter and posted cryptic bitcoin related promotional tweets on a few of the celebrity owned twitter accounts.

This year seems to be the turn of Indian Prime Minister Narender Modi, as the threat actors hacked his Twitter account and posted a message claiming Bitcoin to be made as a legal tender throughout India from January 1st, 2022.

Interestingly, hacking tweet posting did not end over here, as the hacker also added in the social media message that Indian government has adopted Bitcoin as a legal tender and has bought over 500 BTC from an international exchange site in order to distribute the exchanged money in rupees to all the 130+ crore citizens on the Indian Sub-Continent.

As the post was tweeted on Saturday, the Prime Minister’s Office, shortly referred as PMO, immediately noticed the development and took control of the PM’s twitter account within hours of the cyber attack and posting of cryptic messages.

Twitter took the issue seriously and immediately restored the account of Indian Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi ji and urged his office staff to adopt for a 2FA and basic cyber security measures, while handling and posting tweets from the account.

What’s surprising about the incident is the fact that the hack comes at the juncture when Indian parliament was to announce a regulation filled usage of Bitcoins in the region.

Indian Computer Emergency Response Team has posted a message that it is deeply investigating the matter and was also probing the cyber incident on whether any adversary nation was involved in the Narender Modi twitter hack.
