Akamai Technologies, a cloud services provider from Massachusetts says that since early 2018 the gaming industry has witnessed over 12 billion cyberattacks- mainly related to credential stuffing.
According to the 2019 State of the Internet/Security Web Attacks and Gaming Abuse report of Akamai, the gaming industry has become a software target to hackers as they can easily make profits from the in-game items gained from the attack.
The content delivery and cloud services provider said that during a period of 17 months i.e from Nov’17 to March’19 over 15 billion cases related to credential stuffing were witnessed on the gaming industry.
As most of the gamers are estimated to be financially strong, cyber crooks target them to make easy money.
Surprisingly China happens to be the largest source of application attacks followed by Russia.
Akamai Technologies emphasizes on the fact that most of the credential stuffing attacks are being disseminated on the darknet and on various technology forums such as Github.
Although, Akamai’s main markets are security, content, and media. It is planning to invade its presence into the business of IoT on the Edge. And to facilitate its objective the company is thinking to hike up the numbers of its existing network of 250,000 servers to 500,000 in near time. The company has also planned to optimize its services to over 6,000 locations from 4,000-stretching across 140 countries.
“Securely delivering massive amounts of data will be our goal”, said Craig Adams, Senior Vice President, and General Manager, Web Performance & Security, Akamai Technologies.
