Cyber Attack on US Treasury and Commerce Departments

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have issued a formal statement in the last weekend confirming a cyber attack on the Treasury and Commerce Departments of United States.

Microsoft reacted to the news and said that its preliminary inquiries in association with the law enforcement have revealed that Russian intelligence service is suspected to be involved in the attack.

However, Russia has readily denied the allegations put forward by Microsoft and added that the tech giant should think twice before publishing sensational news.

Dmitri Alperovitch, a Cybersecurity expert, felt that the penetration of US Government agencies can lead to serious impact on the running government as espionage can lead to loss of trust in governance among the populace.

The highlight of this entire hack saga is that it was revealed just a few days after FireEye revealed that the sensitive documents from its database were accessed by hackers in a sophisticated malware attack launched on its network by inducing malware into the update of SolarWinds Software used by its experts.

So, the apparent hacks on Treasury and Commerce Departments along with the data compromise of FireEye suggest that the Biden Government will face some serious challenges in protecting the critical infrastructure of United States in the future.

Note- SolarWinds that has almost 300,000 customers on a global note offers accounting software services to the Pentagon, the State Department, NASA, the NSA, the Department of Justice, the US Military and over 10 leading telecommunication companies in the world.
