Ransomware attack on Travelex leads to website shutdown

Ransomware attack on Travelex, which is into the business of foreign exchange, has forced the company staff to shut down the website. It’s reported that the website was targeted by a malware attack on the eve of the New Year and the company has resorted to the service of restoring the service by this weekend.

 

Tony D’Souza, the Travelex Boss has confirmed the cyber incident and added in his statement that his company will deal with manual transactions until the services are restored. So, those interested might avail the foreign exchange services over the counter in all the company headed branches.

 

Prima facie has confirmed that no data was compromised in the incident. However, the possibility that the hackers might have stolen some data and then encrypted the database is rich.

 

A team of experts from a renowned Cybersecurity firm is helping out the IT authorities of the international payment service offering company to the core. And are all branches of Travelex including those at Tesco Bank will function manually till the digital transaction services gets restored from data backups.

 

Note 1- Founded in 1976, Travelex is into the business of foreign exchange since then and is headquartered in London, United Kingdom. Its main business is payments in international denominations, bureaux de exchange, and credit cards in prepaid form.

 

Note 2- The cyberattack on the eve of this New Year 2020 is said to have affected customers from the UK, US, Australia, and France. As travelers having accounts in Tesco and Asda bank depend on Travelex for money services, a small portion of them seem to be affected by the ransomware attack.

 

Note 3- Ryuk ransomware is suspected to be the culprit behind the cyber incident. However, a source from Travelex based on the condition of anonymity is naming data stealing and encrypting Maze Ransomware as the virus behind the Travelex cyber attack.
