Google Union might put off Pentagon AI Project permanently

Google, the Alphabet Inc’s subsidiary, has recently given a nod to its employees for representing their demands and needs through a union. And the move might backfire at the web search giant say experts as the company will now need the nod of the union before launching new products and services to the world.

Employees of Google have made it official on January 4th, 2020 that they would form a union soon to take their confrontations to the next level with the management. So, from now on all employees, contractors and those regardless of their roles or classification in the company will be a part of the union that is expected to come into existence from June 2021.

However, as said earlier, the future of the tech giant in introducing new tech to the world looks bleak as its workers’ union might block the release on any innovation if they feel to do so on terms best known to them.

For instance, Pentagon offered a billion dollar contract to Google in 2017 for developing machine learning tools using artificial intelligence to make the future warfare automated. And the process was named as ‘Project Maven’ where pre-indulged electronic data driven by AI technology was being used to improve drone strikes & other lethal attacks on the battlefield.

This started a confrontation between the employees and the senior staffs eventually forcing the internet juggernaut pull back from the Pentagon project that weaponised AI tech in military warfare.

In the April 2018, the project was sidelined by the American tech giant because of the protests from its employees that its participation in the DoD project could do a lot of damage to its brand and its trust among its users. Thus, because of these developments, the Android OS developer was forced to cancel the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Function Team assigned to Project Maven that would have expired in early 2019.

Now, if the employees of the said private entity form a union, then the situation might deteriorate, disallowing the tech giant from taking all future decisions generously.

What’s your say on this….?
