‘Olympic Destroyer’ malware used to disrupt Tokyo 2020 Olympics and 2017 French Elections

UK’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has confirmed that the cyber attacks launched on the 2018 Winter Olympics held in South Korea and 2017 French Elections were initiated by the Russian Intelligence Agency, GRU.

In support to this confirmation, the US Justice Department indicted six Russians suspected to be working for GRU Military Intelligence because they launched cynical and reckless cyber attacks on a global note and that includes the plan to digitally disrupt the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics scheduled to be held early next year.

Unsealing the charges against a hacking group called Sandworm, US law enforcement agencies have confirmed the involvement of Russian spies in the attack on the International sporting events by posing as Chinese and North Korean hackers.

USA and Britain’s security experts have confirmed that Sandworm which is also known with other names such as BlackEnergy Group and VoodooBear was being funded by the Vladimir Putin’s government.

Note 1- It is already known that Russia launched such attacks in retaliation to the decision of World Anti Doping Agency (WADA to ban Russian athletes from all international sporting events for reasons.

Note 2- Olympic destroyer is the malware that was being used to digitally disrupt the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. And the same malware is suspected to be used to infiltrate the networks of agencies probing the Salisbury Novichok Poisoning and the hacking of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
