Virgin Media data breach compensation is expected to be around £5000 per impacted customer as a Group Action Claim lawsuit has been launched for penalizing the company for failing to secure the data of its 900,000 customers due to a configuration error.
Currently, the British Telecom giant has been given 4 weeks to respond to the lawsuit. Otherwise, it might have to face a legal responsibility and might force to pay a penalty of £4.5 billion as compensation.
‘Your Lawyers’, a consumer action law firm based in Chesterfield, says that the misconfiguration error might have made hackers access sensitive details like full name and contact details between April 2019 and Feb 2020.
Aman Johal, the director of Your Lawyers will be leading the class action suit against Virgin Media and is urging all those affected to sign up for the digital campaign to attain justice.
Although Virgin media reiterated the fact that the data breach was caused due by the laxity of one of its employees in securing the database, it did agree that the company has to take the blame and admit the liability from Your Lawyers. Thereafter, getting ready for a group litigation order (GLO) to give compensation for those impacted by the data breach.
As of now, over 2K customers of Virgin Media have signed up for the compensation plea and more are expected to sign-up for the legal public interest campaign.
Note- On March 5th of this year, information of over 900,000 customers of Virgin Media was leaked online due to a configuration error and that includes sensitive details like email addresses, full names, date of birth, contact details, and information of customers of those seeking adult-rated content from the service provider.
