Ransomware attack money donated to two charities

“Darkside” a hackers group known to spread ransomware, has done something startling that not only surprised the security experts but the entire world. As per a report published on BBC yesterday, they donated bitcoins gained from companies through ransom to two charities- The Water Project and The Children International.

NOTE 1-The Water Project is a charity that works to strives for clean water supply to Africa. While Children International is the one that strives to remove poverty and help children in need.

As the hacking group Darkside wants to make the world a better place to live, they have started to donate 0.88 BTC, worth about $10k from their ransomware gains. And they say that this doesn’t stop here. As the hacking group wants to donate more from its proceeds in the future as well.

Proving their stance, the Darkside hackers gang has posted a tax receipt for its 0.88 BTC donation on their blog post on October 13th, 2020, and added in its media update that their focus will only be on companies, profitable organizations, and technology-related firms and will deviate towards hospitals, schools, government or charities- in line with the objective of Robinhood….right?

As per the sources reporting to Cybersecurity Insiders, hackers donated their bitcoin proceeds through an organization named ‘The Giving Box’ that is also known to channelize donations to more than 67 different non-profit organizations on a worldwide note.

The Giving Block said that it received the BTC payments through a bitcoins mixer that makes it hard for law enforcement to track down the proceeds to the recipient.

NOTE 2– Any donations received from earnings made through crime has to be rejected. But this law doesn’t apply to charities as they do not have a way to return digital currency.
